After becoming a member of the Masonic lodge *Zur Wohltätigkeit* in Vienna on December 14, 1784, Mozart composed a considerable number of works for Masonic ceremonies. Among them are several songs with piano accompaniment; these lie on the boundary between solo song and part song, as the final lines sung by the soloist are repeated by a three-part male choir. In addition, he wrote several cantatas for festive Masonic occasions. A special case is the purely instrumental Masonic Funeral Music, K. 477, composed on the occasion of the death of two lodge brothers.
