Die vielen Einzelstücke für ein Tasteninstrument (wozu auch die wenigen Stücke für Glasharmonika und für mechanische Instrumente gezählt werden können) gehören unterschiedlichen Traditionen an. Die bei weitem größte Gruppe, nahezu 60 Einzelwerke, stammt aus Mozarts Kinderjahren. Leopold Mozart hat eine größere Anzahl von Stücken in das Notenbuch eingetragen, das er ursprünglich für den Klavierunterricht seiner Tochter Maria Anna angelegt hatte; hierbei handelt es sich um die ersten Werke Mozarts überhaupt. Erst mit acht Jahren konnte Wolfgang seine Kompositionen selbst aufschreiben. Während einer schweren Erkrankung des Vaters in England füllte Mozart 1764 das sogenannte Londoner Notenbuch mit 42 Klavierstücken (KV 15a–KV 15ss). Einige von Mozarts späteren Klavierstücken sind notierte Fantasien, außerdem gibt es eine Reihe von Rondosätzen, insbesondere aus der Wiener Zeit. In diesem Zusammenhang sind auch die Klavierauszüge von Ensembletänzen zu erwähnen. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren erhielt Mozart mehrmals den Auftrag, Stücke für kunstvolle mechanische Orgeln im sogenannten Müller’schen Kunst-Kabinett zu schreiben (KV 594, KV 608 und KV 616). Diese wurden bald nach Mozarts Tod durch Klavierbearbeitungen, überwiegend für Klavier zu vier Händen, bekannt.
