Die Serenade in C KV 648 ist in einer einzigen Quelle erhalten geblieben, die die Komposition „Wo[l]fgang Mozart“ zuschreibt. Die Serenade ist mit zwei Violinen und instrumentalem Bass besetzt und besteht aus sieben Miniatursätzen, darunter einem Marsch. Die Ansetzung des Komponistennamens sowie der Stil des Werks legen eine Entstehung vor der ersten Italienreise nahe, die am 13. Dezember 1769 begann. Mozarts Autorschaft ist sehr wahrscheinlich. Es erscheint denkbar, dass diese Komposition mit der verschollenen Cassation in C KV 653 oder der verschollenen Kleinen Nachtmusik KV 41g identisch ist.
Mozart nannte eine kleine Anzahl von Werken für Streicher allein oder für Streicher, Hörner und gegebenenfalls ein weiteres Holzblasinstrument Divertimento oder Notturno. Die Satzzahl ist variabel und reicht von drei bis sechs Sätzen. Nach der Aufführungspraxis des 18. Jahrhunderts erfordern diese Stücke nur einen Spieler pro Stimme, im Gegensatz zu Serenaden und Kassationen, die normalerweise mit Orchester aufgeführt wurden. Die berühmtesten Werke dieser Art sind Ein musikalischer Spaß KV 522 (mit 2 Hörnern) und Eine kleine Nachtmusik KV 525 (für Streicher) aus der Wiener Zeit. In musikalischer Hinsicht können die drei Divertimenti KV 136–138 kaum von den frühen Streichquartetten KV 155–160 unterschieden werden. KV 247, KV 287 und KV 334 bilden eine eigenständige Gruppe von Sextetten mit einem hochvirtuosen Part für die erste Violine.
