Divertimento in C for clavier four-hands
sorted in:
The Divertimento in C for Clavier Four Hands, KV 628 is known only from references in letters written by Mozart’s sister Maria Anna to the Leipzig publisher Breitkopf & Härtel. On March 23, 1800, she mentioned “two pieces, which were his first compositions for four hands” in a letter to the publishing house. She removed the pieces from her Music Book and sent them to the publisher. Later, she added that Wolfgang had composed the piece in London when he was eight years old. This date seems plausible, since Wolfgang and Maria Anna performed together on keyboard instruments in 1765 at the latest. Only the incipit has been preserved in a handwritten catalog of Breitkopf & Härtel from the early 19th century, where the work is referred to as a “Divert[imento] a 4”.
